The 12-Point Cybersecurity Checklist Every Fuquay-Varina Small Business Should Run This Quarter
Most small business owners know cybersecurity matters but have no idea whether they’re actually protected. Here’s a practical, no-jargon checklist you can run through this quarter. None of it requires a big budget, just attention. If you can’t confidently check a box, that’s a gap worth closing before someone else finds it.
The 12-point checklist
- Multi-factor authentication is on everywhere. Email, banking, Microsoft 365, anything important. MFA stops the vast majority of account takeovers cold, and it’s free. This is the single highest-impact item on the list.
- Your backups are automated and tested. Not “we have backups somewhere”. They are automated daily, and actually restored from at least once to prove they work. An untested backup is just a hope.
- Backups are isolated from your network. If ransomware can reach and encrypt your backups along with everything else, they won’t save you. They need to be separated or immutable.
- Every device has active endpoint protection. Modern security software on every computer, kept up to date, not the free trial that expired in 2023.
- Software and operating systems are patched. The majority of breaches exploit known holes that a patch already fixed. Automatic updates should be on.
- Your team can recognize a phishing email. Phishing is how most attacks start. A short training session, even once a year, dramatically cuts your risk.
- Passwords are strong and not reused. A password manager solves this painlessly. Reused passwords mean one leaked site can unlock your whole business.
- Old accounts are disabled. When someone leaves, their access should be shut off the same day. Former-employee accounts are a common and overlooked entry point.
- Your Wi-Fi and firewall are configured properly. A guest network separate from your business network, a real firewall, and no default passwords on your equipment.
- Email has anti-spoofing protection. SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records stop criminals from impersonating your domain to your clients. Most small businesses have never set these up.
- You know what data you have and where it lives. You can’t protect what you can’t see. Know where your sensitive data sits and limit who can reach it.
- You have a plan for when something goes wrong. Who do you call? What gets restored first? A simple written plan turns a panic into a procedure.
How to use this list
Don’t try to fix everything at once. Go down the list, mark each item green, yellow, or red, and start with the reds at the top. Items 1 through 3: MFA, tested backups, and isolated backups. They are the ones that most often make the difference between a minor incident and a business-ending one, so start there.
Why this matters more for small businesses
There’s a dangerous myth that hackers only go after big companies. The opposite is true. Automated attacks scan the entire internet looking for anyone who’s vulnerable, and they don’t care how small you are. They care whether they can get in. Small businesses get targeted constantly precisely because they tend to assume they’re too small to bother with, which makes them easy.
The good news is that you don’t need an enterprise budget to be a hard target. Most of this list costs little more than time and attention. Closing even the top few gaps puts you well ahead of the businesses attackers find easiest to victimize.
